About 100 km from Hanoi, Ninh Binh is one of the few places where international visitors can experience northern Vietnam's limestone landscape and rice fields in a single day. But "going to Ninh Binh" covers a lot of ground — and picking the wrong site costs half a day.

Trang An: three routes, three experiences

The Trang An complex offers several boat routes, each taking roughly 2.5 to 3 hours. All are hand-rowed through water-filled caves, but the content differs noticeably:

  • The cave-heavy route — for visitors who want to focus on the cave landscape.
  • The temple route — combining scenery with stops at old shrines.
  • The film-set route — with a reconstructed film location, popular with younger travellers.

If you are only doing this once and want balance, take the route that mixes caves with temples.

Trang An, Tam Coc or Mua Cave?

SiteMain experienceTime needed
Trang AnRowing through water caves, wide landscapes2.5 – 3 hours
Tam CocRowing between rice fields along the Ngo Dong river1.5 – 2 hours
Mua CaveNearly 500 steps to a panoramic summit1 – 1.5 hours

A sensible day is Trang An in the morning and Mua Cave in the late afternoon. Combining Trang An and Tam Coc on the same day duplicates the experience and wears people out.

The best time to go

Late May to early June is the rice harvest at Tam Coc, when the fields along the Ngo Dong turn gold — Ninh Binh's most photographed scene. September to November brings cool, drier weather, ideal for the climb at Mua Cave. Avoid midday in summer: most of the boat route has no shade.

A one-day plan from Hanoi

  1. 06:30 — depart Hanoi, arrive Ninh Binh around 09:00.
  2. 09:00 – 12:00 — the Trang An boat route.
  3. 12:00 – 13:30 — lunch; try mountain goat and crispy rice.
  4. 14:00 – 15:00 — Hoa Lu ancient capital.
  5. 15:30 – 17:00 — climb Mua Cave for sunset.
  6. 17:00 — return to Hanoi.

If you can, stay a night in Ninh Binh. Early morning here, before the day groups arrive, is the finest part of the day.

What to bring

  • Trainers with grip for the Mua Cave steps — sandals are the wrong choice.
  • A wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen for the boat.
  • Small notes in cash to tip the rower.

Victoria Tour runs Ninh Binh as both a day trip and an overnight programme, with English-speaking guides and other languages on request.
