Da Nang and Hoi An are less than 30 km apart but move at completely different speeds: one a modern beach city, the other a walkable old town. Four days is enough to feel both without rushing either.
Day 1: Da Nang, easing into the coast
Land in the morning, check in near My Khe beach, and spend the afternoon walking the Han riverfront. In the evening the illuminated bridges make a gentle opening scene for the trip.
- Afternoon: My Khe beach and the east bank of the Han
- Evening: night market and Da Nang street food
Day 2: Marble Mountains and Son Tra peninsula
Start early to stay ahead of the midday heat. The Marble Mountains are best between 7 and 9 am, while the caves are still cool and light falls through the rock openings. Keep the afternoon for the Son Tra peninsula and its views across the whole bay.
Getting around
The Son Tra road is steep with tight bends. With older travellers or small children, use a chauffeured vehicle rather than self-drive scooters.
Day 3: My Son in the morning, Hoi An by night
My Son is a valley complex of Cham temple towers; going early means cooler air and far fewer people. Transfer to Hoi An in the early afternoon, check in, rest, then start exploring the old town from around 4 pm once the light has softened.
Hoi An is at its best in two windows: before 8 am and after 4 pm. At midday the old town is both hot and crowded.
Day 4: a slow morning, then departure
Spend the last morning on the unhurried things: the Japanese Covered Bridge, the old merchant houses, a short cooking class, or the herb village at Tra Que. With a late flight, add a midday stop at An Bang beach before the airport transfer.
What to eat in central Vietnam
- Mi Quang — the region's signature noodle dish, best at breakfast.
- Cao lau — found only in Hoi An, with its distinctive chewy noodles.
- Hoi An banh mi — a morning queue is entirely normal.
- My Khe seafood — go in the evening and pick the place full of locals.
Where to base yourself
If beach and city amenities matter most, stay in Da Nang throughout and visit Hoi An as a day trip. If you want the old town at night — once the day visitors have left — sleep at least one night in Hoi An. Over four days, two nights in Da Nang plus one in Hoi An is usually the best balance.
